Exam Information
There are five electrician license classifications in Utah: Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, Residential Journeyman and Residential Master. The examinations required for each are listed below. Preapproval for testing is NOT required.
NOTE: Please do not submit your application for licensure until you have passed all required exams and have met all other licensing requirements.
Apprentice Electrician
There are no exam requirements for this classification
Residential Journeyman Electrician
Testing Eligibility Requirements:
- Completion of a 2 year (min. 288 classroom hours) electrical education program or the competency exam equivalence; and 3,000 hours of residential electrical experience as a licensed apprentice electrician.
- OR
- 8,000 hours of residential electrical experience as a licensed apprentice electrician.
Examination Requirements:
- Utah Residential Journeyman Electrician Code Examination
- Utah Residential Journeyman Electrician Theory Examination
- Utah Residential Electrician Practical Exam (4 modules)

Journeyman Electrician
Testing Eligibility Requirements:
- Completion of a 4 year (min. 576 classroom hours) electrical apprenticeship education program or the competency exam equivalence; and 6.000 hours of electrical experience as a licensed apprentice electrician.
- OR
- 16,000 hours of electrical experience as a licensed apprentice electrician
Examination Requirements:
- Utah Journeyman Electrician Code Exam
- Utah Journeyman Electrician Theory Exam
- Utah Electrician Practical Exam (6 modules)

Residential Master Electrician
Testing Eligibility Requirements:
- Bachelors or Master Degree in Electrical Engineering with EAC/ABET accreditation; and 2,000 hours of residential electrical experience as a licensed apprentice electrician.
- OR
- 4,000 hours of residential electrical experience as a licensed residential journeyman electrician.
Examination Requirements:
- Utah Master Electrician Code Exam
- Utah Master Electrician Theory Exam
- Utah Residential Electrician Practical Exam (4 modules)*
*NOTE: Applicants for the ME license are not required to take the Practical exam if it was previously passed to receive a JE license.

Master Electrician
Testing Eligibility Requirements:
- Bachelors or Master Degree in Electrical Engineering with EAC/ABET accreditation; and 2,000 hours of electrical experience as a licensed apprentice electrician.
- OR
- Associate Degree in Applied Science; and 4,000 hours of electrical experience as a licensed journeyman electrician.
- OR
- 8,000 hours of electrical experience as a licensed journeyman electrician.
Examination Requirements:
- Utah Master Electrician Code Exam
- Utah Master Electrician Theory Exam
- Utah Electrician Practical Exam (6 Modules)*
*NOTE: Applicants for the ME license are not required to take the Practical exam if it was previously passed to receive a JE license.
